چکیده

The spatial distributions of functional activation of rat somatosensory cortex by forepaw stimulation were quantitatively compared using blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal and signal weighted by cerebral blood volume (CBV). The BOLD contrast to noise (CNR) distribution showed a significant dorsal shift with respect to the CBV method at fields strengths of 2 T (0.69 +/- 0.09 mm) and 4.7 T (0.44 +/- 0.15 mm). These shifts were attributed to the gradient of resting state blood volume across somatosensory cortex and the different CNR characteristics of the two image methods. The underlying principles suggest that the CBV method has a more uniform sensitivity to percent changes in functional indicators (blood volume or deoxygenated hemoglobin) across regions of variable resting state CBV. HASTE sequences for functional MRI: BOLD and VASO

B. A. Poser, D. G. Norris FC Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, Nijmegen, Netherlands Introduction Multiply-refocused sequences such as HASTE are attractive for functional MRI (fMRI) as they are free of susceptibility artifacts, and yield pure T2 contrast. The latter can be advantageous for two fMRI applications: First, spin echo (SE) based fMRI. SE reportedly offers better spatial loca...

Arterial versus total blood volume changes during neural activity-induced cerebral blood flow change: implication for BOLD fMRI.

Quantifying both arterial cerebral blood volume (CBV(a)) changes and total cerebral blood volume (CBV(t)) changes during neural activation can provide critical information about vascular control mechanisms, and help to identify the origins of neurovascular responses in conventional blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cerebral blood flow (CBF), CBV(a), and ...

Linking brain vascular physiology to hemodynamic response in ultra-high field MRI

Functional MRI using blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast indirectly probes neuronal activity via evoked cerebral blood volume (CBV) and oxygenation changes. Thus, its spatio-temporal characteristics are determined by vascular physiology and MRI parameters. In this paper, we focus on the spatial distribution and time course of the fMRI signal and their magnetic field strength depen...

Y. Yang, H. Gu, E. A. Stein Neuroimaging Research Branch, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Baltimore, MD, United States Introduction Functional MRI (fMRI) techniques based on BOLD (blood oxygenation level-dependent) and CBF (cerebral blood flow) (1,2) contrasts have been used extensively for mapping functional neuroanatomy. Recently, an fMRI technique based on cerebral blood volume (CBV) chang...

Quantitative MRI of Cerebral Arterial Blood Volume

Baseline cerebral arterial blood volume (CBV(a)) and its change are important for potential diagnosis of vascular dysfunctions, the determination of functional reactivity, and the interpretation of BOLD fMRI. To quantitative measure baseline CBV(a) non-invasively, we developed arterial spin labeling methods with magnetization transfer (MT) or bipolar gradients by utilizing differential MT or di...
